just crying. >>> we have team coverage tonight, we have ktvu's john sasaki in newtown. >> reporter: locals and visitors alike are paying their respects. >> we're thankful that we have our children and we're just, we wanted to come up and light a candle, say something nice. >> reporter: two days after this tragedy happened it seems like the emotions are flowing more freely. perhaps the shock is starting to ware off. yet people are still making the pilgramage. >> i have kids too, and it's sad. >> reporter: among the visitors we met was the county commissioner from pennsylvania. >> you can learn a lot by this tragedy. we're going the make the schools better. we're going to make the schools more safe. >> reporter: it is an overwhelming scene, especially for those with connection to the scene. this woman's son jack attends the school and they brought a jack in the box for dylan. >> i am very sad about everything, i don't understand why anyone would do this to little kids like us. >> reporter: as you watch people gather at the memorial near the school. i have to tell you while we had lun

web site, dedicated to the connecticut school shooting. just log on to ktvu .com and click on the tab on the front page. >>> we are getting word into the channel 2 newsroom of a bart station closure. bart officials say the dublin pleasanton station is closed due to an equipment problem at the station. dublin trains will not travel past west dublin station. so this is causing delays for passengers heading east on dublin trains. >>> the police officers who rescued a newborn baby in san francisco are speaking out today. both the child and mother were taken to the hospital. ktvualle rasmus has more on how the police are describing their experience. >> reporter: the police officers are calling it a traumatic experience because the newborn baby almost did not survive but because of their quick response and the knowledge of cpr, the baby is in stable condition. the officer's here at the baby station got a standing ovation for their actions. country, including right here in the bay area. ktvu's tara moriarty is live in san francisco with more on how students will honor the victims in newtown -- newtown, today. >> reporter: well, they plan to stand in solidarity with the students by wearing their school colors. behind me here, you can see there is a fence up around this school. that, of course, is gonna be the topic of discussion among a lot of school administrators. many schools have fences designed to keep intruders out. but if they get in, it's questionable how far they can get. california's superintendent expects more discussions about this. he's alerted all 1100 public school districts to reskew safety plans -- review safety plans. >> you minimize the risk as best you can. we can't live in fear and have every school be a closed fortress of some kind. it's a place of learning. >> reporter: some parents say sandy hook elementary had a locked door through the school but a gunman shot his way through it. state legislators say this is vulnerable. >> it's not gonna stop somebody if that's their intention. they obviously think a

three months into the new year. in 1991 ktvu's george watson looked at how demand grew in the early part of the 20th century. >> in 1917 when america entered world war i it was supplying half of the oil required to fight the war. the use of oil revolutionized the way war is waged. oil fueled the planes, tanks, trucks and ships that fight wars. the end of the war actually increased the world's need for oil. by of the war, america was consuming oil faster than america could produce. the competition was stiff especially from the british and dutch oil interest. in 1919 american companies were spending $400 million in marketing and oil refining by 1925 they were spending a billion dollars on exploration alone. at home oil began to literally gush. production doubled from 1918 to 1923. by 1929 it had tripled and passed the billion barrel mark for the first time. but the greatest oil discovery was yet to be made. standard oil company of california discovered oil on the tiny island of bahrain. success there convinced saudi arabian king. the agreement was for 66 years. but the saudi desert wa
